Community Highlight: David & The Periwinkle Foundation

March 02, 2021

"In every community, there is work to be done. In every nation, there are wounds to heal. In every heart, there is the power to do it.”  Marianne Williamson

For Pasadena Insurance Agency, Inc. caring for our community isn’t a trend. Contributing to making the lives of Texans better, both with time and financially, is a virtue that runs through our entire organization and beyond.

Meet David, our Personal Lines Manager, who has been volunteering at The Periwinkle Foundation for 20 years.  David also is a camp counselor every summer at Camp Periwinkle. Currently, David just finished his two-year commitment as President of the Board of Directors for Periwinkle. His interest in the organization began over 20 years ago when a close friend, Tommy Metz, died of cancer. Tommy loved volunteering at Camp Periwinkle. David wanted to perpetuate the memory of Tommy and continue on his legacy of helping kids with cancer so he started volunteering with The Periwinkle Foundation.

As David notes, “The Periwinkle Foundation develops and provides programs that positively change the lives of children, young adults, and families who are challenged by cancer and other life-threatening illnesses and are cared for at Texas Children's Hospital."

Since its inception in 1983, Periwinkle programs have played a vital role in the overall healing process of these special children, teens, and their families.

What started as a simple camp for children with cancer, now touches the lives of more than 14,000 children each year with programs like Camp YOLO, Family Camp, the Long Term Survivor Program and Arts In Medicine Program, and the titular Camp Periwinkle which runs every August - David’s personal favorite!

The doctors and medical personnel at Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Centers report that The Periwinkle Foundation’s programs are life-altering and directly impact how well patients battle their illnesses.

Thanks to amazing volunteers, staff, and board president David, children with life-threatening diagnosis, can get the support they deserve!
